As the leaves begin to turn and a crisp autumn breeze fills the air, there’s a certain magic that descends upon us, especially leading up to Halloween. This holiday, with its enchanting blend of spooky fun and sweet treats, is a cherished time for families. However, navigating the world of Halloween goodies can be tricky, particularly when dietary needs like gluten sensitivity are involved. But fret not! We’re thrilled to share a recipe that perfectly blends festive joy with wholesome ingredients: these delightfully fun Gluten-Free Halloween Monster Cookies. Crafted with nutrient-rich almond butter, natural sweetener, and rich dark chocolate chips, these cookies are not only a fantastic allergy-friendly option but also an absolute blast to make with your little monsters!

The inspiration for these cookies often comes from moments of pure family joy. Just recently, our home in Canada was filled with laughter and love as my family – my sister, brother-in-law, and our wonderful nephew – visited us from Brazil. It was an incredible three weeks, packed with memorable experiences and the kind of connection that truly warms the heart. While my sister and nephew were familiar with Canada from a previous visit, it was my brother-in-law’s first time experiencing a North American country. Witnessing his awe and excitement as he explored new sights was truly special.
Our days were a whirlwind of adventure and discovery. We soaked up the vibrant culture of Toronto, visiting iconic landmarks like the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), strolling through the historic Distillery District, and enjoying the serene beauty of Toronto Island. A highlight for any visitor, Niagara Falls, left us all breathless with its majestic power. But beyond the famous tourist spots, we made sure to explore the numerous family-friendly parks, playgrounds, and farms that Toronto proudly offers, reveling in its abundant green spaces. To cap off our family reunion, we also embarked on a trip to Montreal, where my husband’s family resides. It was a joyous occasion, bringing everyone together to celebrate not only our family bond but also the beautiful summer weather.

Having my family under one roof, even in our cozy condo, was an absolute dream. We managed perfectly, and the kids had a fantastic time playing together – with the occasional sibling squabble, of course, which only added to the charm of their interactions! My heart swelled with happiness; I had truly missed them. It’s often said that the initial years after immigrating to a new country are the most challenging, and then things gradually improve. For me, however, my experience was quite the opposite. When I first arrived in Canada nearly eight years ago, the novelty and excitement of everything new kept me wonderfully distracted. Missing my family and friends was there, but it didn’t feel overwhelmingly difficult.
However, after about three years, a deeper sense of longing began to set in. This growing yearning for my loved ones in Brazil prompted me to travel back home more frequently. This feeling of homesickness significantly eased last year when we had the immense joy of spending six months back in Brazil with our newborn baby. That extended stay was a balm for the soul. Now, with a more regular rhythm of visiting Brazil once a year and them coming to Canada too, everything feels balanced and wonderful. Looking back, I can confidently say that I am profoundly happy with the life choices I’ve made. I adore Canada and am incredibly proud of all I’ve built and achieved here.
One of the most surprising and fulfilling discoveries I made after moving to Canada was my passion for cooking and baking. It’s funny to think, but if I hadn’t immigrated, I probably wouldn’t have learned how to create these scrumptious gluten-free Halloween monster cookies! You might find that amusing, but it’s true. Cookies, especially specialized ones like these made with almond butter and natural sweeteners, weren’t as prevalent or popular in Brazil during my upbringing. Canada truly opened up a new culinary world for me, inspiring me to experiment with diverse ingredients and healthier baking alternatives.

These adorable and delicious Gluten-Free Halloween Brownies and these very Gluten-Free Halloween Monster Cookies were an instant hit with my nephew. He absolutely adored them, not just for their fantastic taste, but also because they looked like fun, friendly little monsters! I’ll let you in on a secret: he devoured the candy eyes first before moving on to the rest of the cookie. It was such a delightful and amusing sight. We all had a wonderful time enjoying this festive snack, savoring every single bite. The cookies boast a perfect texture – crispy on the outside, yet wonderfully soft and chewy on the inside. What’s even better is how quick and easy they are to make; you’ll only need about 20 minutes from start to finish to prepare and bake these delightful treats!
With Halloween approaching and the memory of my nephew’s delight still fresh, I’m planning to whip up more allergy-friendly delights this week. These include my 2-Ingredient Ghost Chocolate Cups, my beloved Chocolate Almond Butter Cookies, and some classic Peanut Butter Cookies. This way, the kids will have a variety of wholesome treats to enjoy throughout the week. And don’t worry, they won’t be eating them all at once! I always make extra to freeze, ensuring we have delicious homemade goodies on hand for later.

Perfectly fun and easy-to-make Gluten-Free Halloween cookies, ideal for kids. These monster cookies are made with wholesome almond butter, natural sweetener, and rich dark chocolate chips.
Ingredients
- 1 cup unsalted organic almond butter
- ¾ cup Swerve natural sweetener
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1 tsp. kosher salt
- ½ cup dark chocolate chips (or any other chocolate chips you prefer)
- 2 tablespoons Halloween sprinkles
- 44 candy eyes (quantity depends on how many cookies you make)
Instructions
- First, pre-heat your oven to 350˚F (175˚C).
- In a small microwave-safe bowl, add the chocolate chips and melt them in the microwave for approximately 1 minute. Stir until smooth and set aside.
- In a medium-sized mixing bowl, whisk all the remaining ingredients together, excluding the melted chocolate chips.
- Pour the melted chocolate chips into the mixture and mix thoroughly until well combined.
- Using a tablespoon or a cookie scoop, scoop out portions of the batter onto a baking tray lined with a silicone mat or parchment paper. Gently flatten each cookie dough ball with your fingertips.
- Bake for 9 minutes.
- Once baked, remove the cookies from the oven and allow them to cool on the baking sheet for 1 minute.
- While the cookies are still warm and pliable, carefully place candy eyeballs and scatter Halloween sprinkles on top. The warmth will help them adhere.
- Allow the cookies to cool completely on the baking sheet before attempting to remove them. This recipe yields approximately 22 cookies. Enjoy your spooky treats!
Notes
- For a richer chocolate flavor and texture, you can finely chop a quality chocolate baking bar instead of using pre-made chocolate chips.
- Be careful not to over-mix the cookie batter. Over-mixing can develop the gluten (even in gluten-free flours if some are present, or simply make the dough tough), leading to dense rather than soft and chewy cookies.
- For perfectly uniform cookies, a cookie scoop is highly recommended. If you don’t have one, a large spoon or even a kitchen scale to weigh individual dough balls will ensure consistent size and even baking.
- To store: Keep the baked gluten-free cookies in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days to maintain freshness.
- To freeze: After baking and decorating, flash freeze the cooled cookies on a baking sheet until solid. Once firm, transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or container, where they can be stored for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature or gently warm before serving.
