Essential Ingredients for Your Pizza Pasta Bake
Crafting the perfect Pizza Pasta Bake starts with selecting the right ingredients. Each component plays a vital role in building the layers of flavor and texture that make this casserole so irresistible. Here’s a detailed look at what you’ll need:

- Pasta: The foundation of any great pasta bake! I highly recommend using **rotini pasta**. Its charming corkscrew shape and ridges are perfect for capturing and holding onto the savory sauce, gooey cheese, and flavorful toppings, ensuring every bite is packed with goodness. If rotini isn’t available, penne, ziti, or cavatappi would also make excellent substitutes due to their similar ability to cling to sauce.
- Marinara Sauce & Pizza Sauce: The secret to a truly rich and balanced flavor profile lies in combining two types of tomato-based sauces. I suggest using a generous amount of prepared **marinara or spaghetti sauce**, which provides a wonderful depth and sauciness. This is paired with a smaller portion of concentrated **pizza sauce**, which offers that distinct, vibrant pizza flavor. This combination ensures the dish is moist and flavorful without being overly acidic or thin.
- Cheese: What’s pizza (or pasta bake) without an abundance of glorious cheese? For this recipe, we use a dynamic duo. First, **grated Parmesan cheese** is stirred directly into the cooked pasta, infusing every strand with its salty, nutty flavor. Second, a generous layer of **shredded mozzarella** forms the classic bubbly, golden crust on top of the casserole. For the best melt and creamiest texture, I always recommend grating your own mozzarella from a block rather than using pre-shredded varieties, which often contain anti-caking agents that hinder a smooth melt.
- Sausage: For an authentic and robust pizza flavor, **ground Italian sausage** is an excellent choice. Its seasoned profile adds a fantastic savory kick. You can opt for mild or spicy Italian sausage based on your preference. For alternatives, feel free to use ground pork, chicken sausage, lean ground beef, or even ground turkey. For a delicious vegetarian version, simply omit the meat entirely.
- Peppers & Onions: To achieve those classic supreme pizza vibes, finely diced **green bell pepper** and **yellow onion** are sautéed with the sausage. These aromatics add a layer of freshness, subtle sweetness, and a pleasant crunch. If your family isn’t fond of either, feel free to omit one or both without compromising the overall deliciousness.
- Pizza Toppings: This is where the fun truly begins! The beauty of this casserole is its complete adaptability to your favorite pizza toppings. Consider adding slices of **pepperoni**, briny **black olives**, canned sliced **mushrooms**, tangy **artichoke hearts**, zesty **banana peppers**, or diced **tomatoes**. Almost any topping you enjoy on a traditional pizza can find a happy home in this bake.
- Finishing Touch: While optional, a sprinkle of fresh **parsley or basil** after baking adds a bright, fresh herbaceous note, elevating the dish visually and aromatically. However, for younger, pickier eaters, I often skip this step to keep the presentation familiar and approachable.
- Other Pantry Staples: Don’t forget a good quality **extra virgin olive oil** for sautéing, fragrant **Italian seasoning**, and fresh **garlic** for building the flavor base. A pinch of **kosher salt** for the pasta water is also crucial.
Gathering these ingredients will set you up for success, ensuring a delicious and satisfying Pizza Pasta Bake every time!
How to Make the Best Pizza Pasta Casserole
Creating this family-favorite Pizza Pasta Casserole is a straightforward process, combining simple cooking techniques to build layers of irresistible flavor. While a detailed recipe card with exact measurements is provided below, here’s a quick, confident walkthrough to guide you through each step of preparation, ensuring a perfect bake every time.
- Prepare Your Pasta: Begin by bringing a large pot of generously salted water to a rapid boil. The salt in the water is crucial for seasoning the pasta from within. Once boiling, add your rotini noodles and cook them until they are al dente – meaning they are still firm to the bite. This usually means cooking for about 1 minute less than the package directions suggest, as they will continue to cook in the oven. Before draining, make sure to reserve about 1 cup of the starchy pasta cooking liquid. This liquid is a secret weapon, used later to achieve the perfect sauce consistency, helping it cling beautifully to the noodles.

- Sauté the Meat & Aromatics: While your pasta water heats up and the pasta cooks, you can get a head start on building the flavor base. Heat a teaspoon of olive oil in a large, deep skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add your ground Italian sausage (or preferred protein) along with the minced yellow onion. Cook for 3-5 minutes, breaking up the sausage with a spoon as it browns. Next, toss in the diced green bell pepper and continue to cook until the sausage is fully browned and the vegetables have softened. Finally, stir in the Italian seasoning and minced garlic, cooking for just 30-60 seconds until fragrant. Be careful not to burn the garlic! If there’s any excessive grease, drain it from the pan.

- Combine & Sauce It Up: Once the pasta is drained and the sausage mixture is ready, it’s time to bring everything together. Add the cooked pasta, the rich marinara sauce, a portion of the reserved pasta cooking liquid (start with about half a cup), and the grated Parmesan cheese into the skillet with the sausage and vegetables. Stir everything thoroughly until the pasta is evenly coated in the delicious, savory sauce. If the pasta mixture seems a little dry or too thick, gradually add more of the reserved pasta water, a splash at a time, until it reaches your desired consistency – it should be saucy but not watery.

- Assemble Your Casserole: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Transfer the entire pasta mixture from the skillet into a 9×13 inch casserole dish, spreading it evenly across the bottom. Next, generously spread the thick pizza sauce over the pasta layer – this creates that quintessential pizza flavor on top. Finally, sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the pizza sauce, followed by your chosen pizza toppings like pepperoni slices, black olives, or mushrooms. Arrange them artfully for a beautiful presentation!

- Bake to Golden Perfection: Cover the casserole dish tightly with aluminum foil. A pro tip: lightly spray the underside of the foil with cooking spray. This simple step prevents the melted cheese from sticking to the foil, ensuring you get that beautiful, unbroken golden layer when you uncover it. Bake for 30 minutes. After this initial baking period, carefully remove the foil and continue to bake for another 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is gloriously bubbly, fully melted, and has developed a slight golden hue on top.
Kristen’s Kitchen Tip
Don’t skip spraying the foil! It’s a small detail that makes a big difference, ensuring that luscious layer of melted cheese stays exactly where it belongs – on your delicious pasta bake, not stuck to the foil.
- Serve and Enjoy: Once out of the oven, let the casserole rest for 5-10 minutes before serving. This allows the cheese and sauce to set slightly, making it easier to serve clean portions. Garnish with a sprinkle of fresh parsley or basil and extra grated Parmesan cheese, if desired. For the ultimate pizza night feast, pair your Pizza Pasta Bake with a crisp, refreshing side salad (like my Copycat Olive Garden Salad or a vibrant Copycat Panera Greek Salad) and some warm, crusty garlic bread or garlic toast. Get ready for rave reviews!

Customize Your Pizza Pasta Bake: Endless Variations
The beauty of this Pizza Pasta Bake lies in its incredible flexibility. It’s a versatile canvas for whatever flavors and ingredients your family loves, allowing you to tailor it to dietary needs, preferences, or simply what you have on hand. Here are some fantastic ways to make this recipe truly your own:
- Keep it Simple for Picky Eaters: If you have very selective palates at your table, don’t fret! For a plain version, simply toss the cooked pasta with marinara, a good amount of Parmesan cheese, a touch of Italian seasoning, and minced garlic. Transfer this mixture to the casserole dish, then top with only pizza sauce and shredded mozzarella. You can even divide the casserole dish in half – one side plain, and the other with cooked and crumbled sausage and/or finely diced veggies for the less picky members of the family. This ensures everyone gets a meal they’ll enjoy without extra effort.
- Load Up on Veggies: Boost the nutritional value and fresh flavor by incorporating more vegetables. You can stir a few handfuls of fresh baby spinach into the pasta mixture during the combining step (it will wilt down nicely). Sauté additional peppers, mushrooms, or even zucchini with the sausage. Other great topping additions include sun-dried tomatoes, roasted red peppers, or thinly sliced onions placed directly on top before baking.
- Go Vegetarian: Easily transform this into a delightful meat-free meal. Simply omit the Italian sausage and pepperoni from the recipe. Instead, you can sauté a medley of vegetables like mushrooms, bell peppers (all colors!), onions, and zucchini as your base. Alternatively, you could add cooked lentils or a plant-based ground “meat” substitute for extra heartiness.
- Explore Different Proteins: While Italian sausage is a classic choice, don’t hesitate to experiment with other proteins. Cooked and shredded chicken (perhaps rotisserie chicken for extra ease!), ground turkey, or lean ground beef seasoned with Italian herbs would all be delicious. You could even add cooked bacon bits for a smoky flavor.
- Spice It Up: If your family enjoys a bit of heat, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the sausage mixture while it cooks. You could also use spicy Italian sausage or top with sliced jalapeños for an extra kick.
- Cheese Variations: While mozzarella and Parmesan are staples, consider adding other cheeses to the mix. A touch of provolone for a sharper flavor, or even some smoked gouda for a unique twist, can elevate the cheesy goodness.
- Different Pizza Styles:
- Hawaiian: Add diced ham and pineapple chunks.
- BBQ Chicken: Use shredded cooked chicken, a layer of BBQ sauce instead of pizza sauce, and red onion.
- White Pizza: Skip the tomato sauces and create a creamy garlic-Parmesan sauce base.
With these ideas, you’ll find that this Pizza Pasta Bake can be a different delightful experience every time you make it!
Make-Ahead & Storage Tips for Convenience
One of the many advantages of this Pizza Pasta Bake is its fantastic make-ahead and freezer-friendly nature, making it ideal for meal prep or feeding a crowd. Proper storage also ensures delicious leftovers. Here’s how to best manage your casserole:
- Assemble Ahead (Refrigerate): You can prepare the entire Pizza Pasta Casserole up to 24 hours in advance. Once assembled in the casserole dish, cover it tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Refrigerate it until you’re ready to bake. When it’s time for dinner, take the casserole dish out of the fridge while your oven preheats to 375°F (190°C). This allows it to come closer to room temperature, ensuring more even baking. Then, bake as directed in the recipe, adding an extra 5-10 minutes to the covered baking time if the casserole is still very cold.
- Freeze for Later: For ultimate convenience, this casserole freezes beautifully for longer storage. Prepare the pasta bake completely, assembling it in a freezer-safe baking dish (glass, ceramic, or disposable foil pans work well). Cover the dish first with a layer of plastic wrap, pressing it down onto the surface of the pasta to prevent freezer burn, then wrap it securely with two layers of heavy-duty aluminum foil. Label with the date and recipe name. Store in the freezer for up to 1 month.
To Bake from Frozen: Remove the casserole from the freezer and remove the plastic wrap and one layer of foil. Let it sit on the counter while your oven preheats to 375°F (190°C). Bake the covered casserole (with one layer of foil) for approximately 60 minutes. Then, remove the foil and continue to bake for another 15-20 minutes, or until the pasta is thoroughly warmed through and the cheese is melted and golden brown.
- Storing Leftovers: Any leftover Pizza Pasta Bake can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Ensure it cools completely before transferring to the container to prevent condensation.
- Reheating Leftovers:
- Microwave: For individual portions, place the desired amount on a heat-safe plate. Cover it with a damp paper towel to help retain moisture and prevent the pasta from drying out. Microwave on high for 1-2 minutes, or until heated through.
- Oven: To reheat a larger portion or the entire remaining casserole, place it back into an oven-safe dish. Cover loosely with foil and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 15-25 minutes, or until warmed through. For a crisper top, remove the foil for the last few minutes.
With these tips, you’ll always have a delicious, homemade meal ready to enjoy, whether fresh from the oven or reheated from the fridge or freezer.

Ingredients
- 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
- 1 pound ground Italian sausage, see note
- 1 small yellow onion, minced
- 1 small green bell pepper, diced
- 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 16 ounces rotini noodles
- 24 ounces marinara sauce
- ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese, + more for serving
- 8 ounces pizza sauce
- 2 cups mozzarella, shredded from a block
- pizza toppings, like pepperoni, black olives, canned sliced mushrooms, etc.
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 375℉ (190℃). While the oven is preheating, bring a large pot of water to a rapid boil.
-
While the water is coming to a boil, heat olive oil in a large deep heavy-duty pan over medium-high heat. Once heated, add the sausage and minced onion, and cook for 3-5 minutes, breaking up the sausage as it cooks. Add bell pepper and continue to cook until the sausage is fully browned. Stir in 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning and 3 cloves garlic (minced) and cook for 30-60 seconds, just to lightly toast. Remove the pan from the heat and drain off any excess grease if needed.
-
At this point the water should be boiling. Add 2-3 teaspoons of kosher salt and the pasta to the boiling water. Cook for 1 minute less than the package instructs and then drain the pasta, reserving 1 cup of the cooking liquid.
-
Add the cooked pasta, ½ cup of the reserved cooking liquid, marinara sauce, and ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese to the sautéed meat and vegetables. Stir to evenly combine, adding additional reserved cooking liquid, a splash at a time, if the pasta seems dry.
-
Transfer the pasta mixture to a 9×13 casserole dish. Spread the pizza sauce over the pasta. Then sprinkle the dish evenly with shredded mozzarella and toppings of your choice.
-
Cover with foil that has been sprayed with cooking spray (to prevent the toppings from sticking to the foil) and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and continue to bake for 10-15 minutes until the cheese has fully melted and the cheese is slightly golden.
-
Serve with grated parmesan cheese and minced parsley if desired.
Equipment
-
9×13 pan
Notes
Pepper + Onion: Optional, but adds a nice depth of flavor to the casserole.
Keep it Simple: For picky eaters, combine cooked pasta with marinara, Italian seasoning, garlic, and Parmesan cheese. Transfer to a baking dish and top with pizza sauce and mozzarella. Add pizza toppings to half the dish, omit toppings, or keep it entirely plain, then bake as directed.
Make-Ahead: Assemble up to 24 hours ahead, cover tightly, and refrigerate. Bake at 375°F for 40 minutes covered + 10-15 minutes uncovered. To freeze, wrap well and freeze up to 1 month. Bake from frozen at 375°F for 60 minutes covered + 15-20 minutes uncovered.
Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat individual portions on a heat-safe plate covered with a damp paper towel to prevent the pasta from drying out.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pizza Pasta Bake
- Can I use a different type of pasta?
- Absolutely! While rotini is recommended for its ability to hold sauce and toppings, you can easily substitute with other medium-sized pasta shapes like penne, ziti, cavatappi, or even elbow macaroni. Choose a pasta that has nooks and crannies to capture the delicious sauce and cheese.
- What if I don’t have both marinara and pizza sauce?
- For the best flavor and consistency, the combination of both sauces is ideal. However, if you only have one, you can use a total of 32 ounces of either marinara or pizza sauce. If using only marinara, you might want to add a pinch of Italian seasoning and a touch of sugar to mimic pizza sauce flavor. If using only pizza sauce, you might need to thin it slightly with some reserved pasta water or vegetable broth to prevent it from being too thick.
- How can I make this casserole healthier?
- To lighten up the dish, use lean ground turkey or chicken sausage instead of pork. You can also increase the amount of vegetables, like adding extra bell peppers, mushrooms, zucchini, or spinach. Opt for whole wheat pasta for added fiber. Reduce the amount of mozzarella slightly, or use a low-fat cheese option.
- Is this dish suitable for meal prepping?
- Yes, it’s excellent for meal prepping! You can assemble the entire casserole up to 24 hours in advance and refrigerate it. For longer-term meal prep, freeze individual portions in airtight containers for easy grab-and-reheat meals throughout the week. Refer to the “Make-Ahead & Storage Tips” section for full freezing instructions.
- Can I omit the meat?
- Yes, for a delicious vegetarian Pizza Pasta Bake, simply omit the Italian sausage. You can sauté extra vegetables like mushrooms, onions, and peppers as your base, or add cooked lentils or a plant-based ground meat substitute for heartiness.
