My culinary passion often revolves around taking beloved, hearty comfort foods and intelligently adapting them into lighter, more health-conscious versions, all while faithfully preserving their cherished original flavors. This philosophy allows us to indulge in our favorite dishes more frequently and with less guilt, fostering a healthier relationship with food. Through this creative process, I’ve developed successful recipes such as Skinny Fettuccine Alfredo and Air Fryer Eggplant Parmesan, each demonstrating that reducing fat and calories absolutely does not equate to sacrificing deliciousness. This Air Fryer Chicken Parmesan recipe stands as another proud achievement in this journey, inviting you to relish the same incredible tastes you expect from classic Italian-American cuisine, but with a remarkable reduction in excess fat and a boost in overall wellness.

The inspiration for this particular Air Fryer Chicken Parmesan recipe is deeply rooted in my popular Baked Chicken Parmesan, which itself represents a lighter, oven-baked interpretation of the traditionally deep-fried dish. My goal was to take that already improved, healthier concept and elevate it further by harnessing the efficiency and crisping power of the air fryer. This modern adaptation ensures that the chicken remains exceptionally tender and moist on the inside, while developing an irresistibly golden, perfectly seasoned, and wonderfully crispy coating on the outside. True to its classic roots, each tender cutlet is generously topped with your choice of a rich, savory homemade spaghetti sauce and abundant layers of creamy, gooey mozzarella cheese that melts into a delightful, bubbly perfection. This method has swiftly become one of my most treasured and go-to ways to prepare chicken, promising a truly satisfying and memorable dining experience every single time.

Why You Will Absolutely Love This Air Fryer Chicken Parmesan

If you’re seeking a simple, incredibly delicious, and health-conscious approach to enjoying Chicken Parmesan, this air fryer recipe is poised to become your new culinary obsession. Here are several compelling reasons why this dish consistently receives rave reviews and quickly becomes a household favorite:

  • Unmatched Health Benefits with No Excess Grease: Traditional Chicken Parmesan often involves deep-frying or pan-frying in significant amounts of oil, contributing to a heavier, calorie-dense meal. Our air fryer method brilliantly circumvents this issue. By using just a minimal spritz of cooking spray and leveraging the air fryer’s powerful hot air circulation, we achieve that coveted golden-brown, irresistibly crispy exterior without submerging the chicken in oil. The outcome is a considerably lighter, far less greasy, yet equally flavorful and satisfying rendition of the classic, allowing you to indulge guilt-free and more frequently.
  • Keeps Your Kitchen Cool: Perfect for Any Season: Cooking with an air fryer offers a significant advantage, especially during warmer months or when you want to conserve energy. Unlike conventional ovens that radiate heat and can drastically warm up your entire kitchen, the air fryer efficiently concentrates heat within its compact chamber. This means you can comfortably prepare this comforting, cheesy Chicken Parmesan dish year-round – even on the hottest summer days – without turning your home into an oven. It’s an energy-efficient solution that helps maintain a cool and pleasant kitchen environment.
  • Rapid Preparation: Ready in Under 30 Minutes for Busy Lifestyles: Time is a precious commodity, particularly on hectic weeknights when you still crave a wholesome, home-cooked meal. This recipe is meticulously crafted for speed and ultimate convenience. Even with the simple, satisfying breading process, your Air Fryer Chicken Parmesan will go from raw ingredients to a steaming, delicious meal on your table in less than 30 minutes. It stands as an incredibly satisfying and nutritious 30-minute meal solution, offering homemade quality and flavor without the usual long wait, making it the perfect culinary answer for any day of the week.
  • A Guaranteed Family-Favorite: Pleasing Every Palate: Chicken Parmesan holds a special place as a timeless comfort food classic, and this air fryer version elevates its universal appeal. The harmonious blend of a crunchy, golden crust, tender and remarkably juicy chicken interior, and generous blankets of melted, bubbly cheese creates a sensory delight that captivates even the most discerning eaters. It’s a culinary triumph that consistently garners enthusiastic praise and ensures clean plates, making it a reliable crowd-pleaser for family dinners and gatherings alike.
  • Remarkably Versatile: Customize to Your Culinary Preferences: Beyond its inherent deliciousness, this recipe boasts impressive versatility, allowing for easy customization to suit individual tastes. You can effortlessly adjust the seasoning in the breading – perhaps introducing a touch more heat with additional red pepper flakes, or intensifying the herbal notes with extra oregano or a blend of Italian seasoning. Furthermore, it pairs exquisitely with an extensive range of side dishes, from traditional pasta to lighter vegetable accompaniments, offering the flexibility to tailor your meal to any craving, dietary requirement, or culinary whim.
  • Beginner-Friendly: A Simple Path to Culinary Success: Do not let any apprehension about cooking or air frying deter you. This recipe is thoughtfully designed to be straightforward and accessible, ensuring success even for novice cooks. Featuring clear, concise, step-by-step instructions and minimal complex techniques, it serves as an excellent foundational dish for beginners to master. The air fryer capably handles the majority of the cooking, guaranteeing consistently perfect results that will undoubtedly boost your confidence and enjoyment in the kitchen.

Essential Ingredients and Equipment for Perfect Air Fryer Chicken Parmesan

The journey to creating an exceptional Air Fryer Chicken Parmesan begins with careful selection of quality ingredients and having the right tools at your disposal. Each element plays a crucial role in achieving that desired crispy exterior, moist and tender interior, and the authentic, rich flavor profile of this classic dish. Below, we delve into what you’ll need and why each component is important:

  • Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breasts: These form the core of our dish. For optimal results, aim for chicken breasts that are approximately ½ inch thick. Achieving uniform thickness is absolutely vital for ensuring the chicken cooks evenly throughout, resulting in consistently tender and perfectly done pieces. You can achieve this by either horizontally slicing larger breasts into thinner cutlets or by gently pounding them between two sheets of plastic wrap using a meat mallet or rolling pin until the desired ½-inch thickness is reached. Pre-cut chicken cutlets are also a convenient time-saving option.
  • Panko Breadcrumbs: This ingredient is the secret to an incredibly crispy, light, and airy coating! Panko breadcrumbs, a Japanese-style breadcrumb, are distinctly larger and flakier than their traditional counterparts. This unique texture allows them to absorb less oil during cooking and become exceptionally crispy and golden when air-fried, perfectly mimicking a deep-fried crunch without the associated greasiness. You’ll find them conveniently located near regular breadcrumbs in most major grocery stores. Seriously, this is a non-negotiable recommendation; the textural difference panko provides is truly game-changing.
  • Freshly Grated Parmesan Cheese: To unlock the most authentic and intensely flavorful experience, it is highly recommended to use freshly grated Parmesan cheese. Pre-grated varieties often contain cellulose or other anti-caking agents that can negatively impact both the flavor and the melting properties of the cheese. Grating your own from a high-quality block of Parmesan will imbue the breading and sauce with its characteristic rich, nutty, and savory notes, adding an undeniable depth of flavor.
  • Spaghetti Sauce: The quality and flavor of your chosen spaghetti sauce significantly contribute to the overall deliciousness of your Chicken Parmesan. You can opt for your favorite store-bought jarred marinara for sheer convenience, or elevate the meal with the rich, homemade taste of a classic Homemade Spaghetti Sauce. Alternatively, a speedy and flavorful Instant Pot Spaghetti Sauce is another excellent choice. Regardless of your selection, ensure it’s a sauce whose flavor profile you genuinely enjoy.
  • Mozzarella Cheese: This is essential for achieving that irresistible, bubbly, and gooey melted topping that defines Chicken Parmesan. You have two excellent options:

    • Fresh Mozzarella: Sliced fresh mozzarella offers a luxurious, creamy texture and a beautifully smooth melt. Remember to drain it thoroughly and pat it dry before slicing to prevent any excess moisture from affecting the dish.
    • Shredded Mozzarella: A highly convenient option that still delivers fantastic meltability. For optimal results, choose low-moisture, part-skim shredded mozzarella, as it tends to melt more cleanly and won’t introduce excess water to your sauce.
  • All-Purpose Flour: Utilized as the initial coating, flour creates a dry, adherent surface on the chicken. This dry base is crucial for the egg wash to stick perfectly, which in turn forms the indispensable foundation for the breadcrumbs to bind to, ensuring a complete and uniformly crisp coating.
  • Egg and Water: Whisked together, the egg and water create what is known as an “egg wash.” This liquid acts as a powerful adhesive, effectively binding the seasoned breadcrumbs to the flour-dredged chicken. A small pinch of salt added to the egg wash can also subtly enhance its flavor.
  • Seasonings (Garlic Powder, Oregano, Kosher Salt, Red Pepper Flakes): These carefully selected spices are vital for infusing the breading with the signature aromatic and savory flavors of Italian cuisine. Garlic powder provides a deep, pungent savoriness, dried oregano contributes classic herbaceous notes, kosher salt enhances all the flavors, and crushed red pepper flakes (an optional addition) introduce a delightful, subtle warmth or a more pronounced kick, depending on your preference. Feel free to adjust the quantities to match your personal taste.
  • Cooking Spray (Olive Oil or Avocado Oil): A light, even coating of cooking spray is absolutely essential for achieving that beautiful golden-brown color and exquisitely crispy crust in the air fryer. This healthy fat alternative helps the breadcrumbs crisp up beautifully without the need for the significant quantities of oil required for traditional frying, making the dish much lighter.
  • Air Fryer: The innovative appliance at the heart of this recipe! This Air Fryer Chicken Parmesan recipe is designed to be highly adaptable and will work effectively with virtually any air fryer model you own, whether it’s a popular basket-style unit or a larger oven-style appliance. I personally rely on a basic GoWise Air Fryer, which has consistently delivered outstanding results. The key to success is understanding your specific air fryer’s capacity and adjusting the batch sizes accordingly to ensure proper airflow, even cooking, and optimal crispness for every piece of chicken.

How to Air Fry Chicken Parmesan: A Detailed Step-by-Step Guide for Perfection

Achieving a perfectly crispy and succulent Air Fryer Chicken Parmesan is surprisingly straightforward and incredibly rewarding. By following these precise, step-by-step instructions, you’ll be able to create a restaurant-quality meal right in the comfort of your own kitchen, impressing family and friends with your culinary prowess and the amazing capabilities of your air fryer.

3 shallow bowls for breading chicken parmesan.
An organized breading station with three shallow dishes ensures a smooth and efficient preparation process.
  1. Prepare the Chicken Cutlets: Begin by properly preparing your chicken breasts. Lay one boneless, skinless chicken breast flat on your cutting board. Place one hand firmly on top of the breast. With a sharp knife, carefully slice the breast horizontally, keeping the knife parallel to the board, starting from the thickest part and extending to the thinner end, to yield two uniform pieces (cutlets). If, after slicing, any cutlets are still uneven in thickness, place them between two sheets of plastic wrap or parchment paper. Gently pound them with a meat mallet or the flat side of a heavy pan until each piece reaches a consistent thickness of about ½ inch. This critical step guarantees even cooking and consistently tender results.
  2. Set Up Your Breading Station: Efficiency and organization are paramount for a mess-free and effective breading process. Arrange three separate shallow dishes, pie plates, or wide bowls in an assembly line on your countertop:

    • Dish 1 (Flour Mixture): In the first dish, thoroughly combine ¼ cup all-purpose flour with ½ teaspoon kosher salt and ½ teaspoon garlic powder. Whisk these ingredients together until they are well incorporated.
    • Dish 2 (Egg Wash): In the second dish, crack one large egg. Add 2 tablespoons of water and a small pinch of salt. Whisk vigorously until the egg and water are completely blended and smooth.
    • Dish 3 (Panko Mixture): In the third and final dish, combine ⅓ cup panko breadcrumbs, ⅓ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese, an additional ½ teaspoon garlic powder, ½ teaspoon dried oregano, and, if desired for a subtle kick, ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes. Stir all these ingredients together meticulously to ensure an even distribution of flavor.
  3. Dredge the Chicken: Now, you’re ready to bread your chicken cutlets one at a time, following the assembly line you’ve created:

    1. First, take one chicken cutlet and dredge it completely in the flour mixture, ensuring both sides are fully coated. Gently shake off any excess flour to prevent a gummy coating.
    2. Next, carefully dip the flour-coated chicken into the egg wash, allowing any excess egg mixture to drip off thoroughly.
    3. Finally, place the egg-coated chicken into the panko and Parmesan breadcrumb mixture. Generously coat the chicken on all sides, pressing the breadcrumbs firmly onto the surface to ensure they adhere well and create a thick, even crust. Transfer the fully breaded chicken to a clean plate. Repeat this entire process for all remaining chicken cutlets.
  4. Prepare for Air Frying: Once all the chicken pieces are breaded, lightly and evenly spray both sides of each cutlet with cooking spray. This crucial step is what helps the breadcrumbs achieve that beautiful golden-brown color and incredibly crispy texture in the air fryer. If your specific air fryer model requires preheating (which is highly recommended for optimal crispness), ensure it’s preheated to 370°F (175°C) according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  5. First Air Fryer Cook: Carefully arrange the sprayed, breaded chicken cutlets in a single layer within the basket or on the tray of your preheated air fryer. It is imperative that the chicken pieces do not overlap or touch each other; overcrowding severely hinders air circulation, leading to uneven cooking and a less crispy result. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you will likely need to cook the chicken in batches if you are preparing more than two servings. Air fry for an initial 6 minutes at 370°F (175°C).
  6. Flip and Second Cook: After the initial 6 minutes, carefully open your air fryer. Using tongs, gently flip each piece of chicken to ensure even browning. Lightly spray the newly exposed side of the chicken with cooking spray once more. Return the chicken to the air fryer and continue cooking for an additional 4 minutes. This step guarantees that both sides of the chicken are beautifully golden and deliciously crispy.
  7. Add Sauce and Cheese: Once the chicken has completed its second cook, carefully remove the basket or tray from the air fryer. Evenly spoon approximately 2 tablespoons of your preferred tomato sauce over the top of each perfectly cooked chicken cutlet. Then, generously layer with either fresh or shredded mozzarella cheese, ensuring good coverage for maximum melt.
  8. Final Air Fryer Cook: Gently return the chicken, now adorned with sauce and cheese, to the air fryer. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, or until the mozzarella cheese is completely melted, beautifully bubbly, and possibly slightly golden around the edges. Crucially, confirm that the chicken has reached a safe internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) using an instant-read meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the chicken.
  9. Serve Immediately: Once cooked to perfection, carefully transfer the hot Air Fryer Chicken Parmesan to serving plates. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley if desired, and serve piping hot. Savor the delightful textural contrast of the crispy coating, the tender, juicy chicken, the rich tomato sauce, and the irresistible gooey cheese!

Storing and Reheating Leftovers for Optimal Freshness and Taste

One of the fantastic advantages of Air Fryer Chicken Parmesan is its ability to make incredibly delicious leftovers, provided you employ the correct storage and reheating techniques to preserve its appealing texture. Here’s a comprehensive guide to ensure your extra portions are just as enjoyable as the freshly cooked meal:

  • Proper Storage: Once your Air Fryer Chicken Parmesan has cooled down to a safe room temperature (within two hours of cooking), promptly transfer it to an airtight container. Store it securely in the refrigerator for a maximum of 3 days. To help prevent the breading from becoming soggy, you might consider placing a paper towel at the bottom of the container to absorb excess moisture, or ideally, store the chicken separately from the sauce if feasible.
  • Reheating for Optimal Crispness (Highly Recommended): Without a doubt, the superior method for reheating leftover Air Fryer Chicken Parmesan and revitalizing its crispy coating is, unsurprisingly, in the air fryer itself. Place the cooled chicken parmesan pieces directly into your air fryer basket or onto its tray in a single layer. Air fry for approximately 3-5 minutes at 360°F (182°C), or until the chicken is thoroughly warmed through and the cheese is delightfully re-melted and bubbly. Monitor it closely during reheating to avoid over-drying the chicken. This technique effectively brings back a significant amount of its original delicious crisp texture.
  • Oven Reheating (Good Alternative): If an air fryer isn’t available, reheating in a conventional oven is an excellent alternative that also helps preserve crispness. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the chicken parmesan on a baking sheet and heat for 10-15 minutes, or until it’s fully warmed through and the cheese is molten. This method also does a commendable job of maintaining some of the desirable crunch.
  • Microwave Reheating (Least Recommended): While technically possible for quick warming, reheating Chicken Parmesan in the microwave is generally discouraged if you value the texture. Microwaving will almost certainly render the crispy breading soggy and can often result in the chicken becoming somewhat rubbery. If you absolutely must use a microwave, heat in very short bursts (e.g., 30-second intervals) until just warm to minimize textural compromise.
  • Freezing for Longer Storage (Pre-Cooked or Cooked): For longer-term storage or meal preparation in advance, you have options for freezing:

    • Uncooked Breaded Chicken: You can bread the chicken cutlets and then flash freeze them on a baking sheet until completely solid. Once frozen, transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or airtight container for up to 2-3 months. When ready to cook, thaw the chicken in the refrigerator overnight, then proceed with the air frying steps as usual, adding the sauce and cheese in the final stages.
    • Cooked Chicken Parmesan: Cooked Chicken Parmesan, complete with sauce and cheese, can also be frozen. Wrap individual portions tightly in plastic wrap and then aluminum foil, or place in freezer-safe containers. Freeze for up to 1-2 months. Be aware that the texture of the breading may soften slightly upon thawing and reheating compared to freshly made or pre-cooked frozen versions.

Recipe FAQs: Your Common Questions About Air Fryer Chicken Parmesan Answered

Here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about preparing this delightful Air Fryer Chicken Parmesan, designed to help you achieve perfect results every time and troubleshoot any potential queries you might have:

Can this recipe be easily doubled or even tripled?

Absolutely! This recipe is initially tailored to yield 2 pieces of chicken, making it ideal for smaller households or individual servings. However, it scales up beautifully and can effortlessly be doubled or even tripled to accommodate a larger family or for batch cooking. The key consideration when increasing the recipe is to prevent overcrowding the air fryer basket or tray. For the absolute best crispy results and uniform cooking, it is essential to work in batches. Ensure there is ample space around each piece of chicken for the hot air to circulate freely and effectively.

What is the most effective way to keep the chicken warm if I cook it in batches?

When preparing multiple batches of Air Fryer Chicken Parmesan, keeping the initial cooked pieces warm while the subsequent batches finish is crucial for serving everything simultaneously. A highly effective method is to preheat your conventional oven to a very low temperature, typically around 200°F (93°C). As each batch of Air Fryer Chicken Parmesan completes its cooking cycle and is topped with its delectable sauce and melted cheese, simply transfer the finished pieces to a clean baking sheet and place them in the gently warmed oven. This technique will maintain their heat without overcooking them or causing them to dry out, ensuring every serving is hot and ready at the same time.

Is it possible to make gluten-free Chicken Parmesan using this air fryer method?

Yes, crafting a wonderfully delicious gluten-free Air Fryer Chicken Parmesan is entirely achievable! The modification is simple: replace the standard all-purpose flour with a high-quality 1:1 gluten-free all-purpose flour blend (for best texture, look for one that includes xanthan gum). For the breading, substitute traditional panko breadcrumbs with readily available gluten-free panko breadcrumbs. The air fryer method works just as effectively with these substitutions, delivering a remarkably crispy and flavorful gluten-free dish that doesn’t compromise on taste or texture.

Can this recipe be adapted to be egg-free?

The egg wash serves a vital function in this recipe, acting as a binding agent that helps the breading adhere firmly to the chicken, which is crucial for forming that desirable crispy crust. However, if you require an egg-free alternative, the recipe can certainly be adapted. In place of the egg wash, you can use a splash of milk (either dairy milk or a non-dairy alternative like almond milk or oat milk) or even a bit of buttermilk. These liquids will still provide sufficient moisture for the flour and breadcrumbs to stick, although the adhesion might be marginally less robust than when using an egg.

Do I need to preheat my air fryer for this recipe?

While some air fryer manufacturers suggest that preheating isn’t strictly necessary, I wholeheartedly recommend preheating your air fryer for optimal results with this Chicken Parmesan recipe. Preheating ensures that the air fryer is at the precise target temperature from the very moment the chicken enters, which is critical for achieving a much crispier exterior and more uniform cooking. Much like preheating a conventional oven, this step helps in developing that perfect golden-brown, crunchy crust. Most air fryers typically take only 3-5 minutes to reach the desired temperature.

Why isn’t my chicken crispy? How can I troubleshoot this?

If your Air Fryer Chicken Parmesan isn’t achieving the desired level of crispness, several common factors might be at play: Overcrowding: This is by far the most frequent culprit! Always ensure that the chicken pieces are arranged in a single layer within the air fryer basket or tray, with adequate space between them for hot air to circulate freely. Insufficient Oil Spray: A light, even coating of cooking spray is absolutely essential for promoting browning and crisping. Don’t be too sparse with it; ensure both sides are lightly coated. Breadcrumb Choice: While various breadcrumbs exist, panko breadcrumbs consistently deliver a superior, lighter, and crunchier texture. Excess Moisture: Ensure your chicken cutlets are thoroughly patted dry before you begin the breading process, and be mindful not to add too much tomato sauce before the final air frying step. If, after cooking, the breading still feels somewhat damp, give it another quick, light spray of oil and air fry for an additional minute or two.

Can I prepare components of this recipe ahead of time?

Yes, you can certainly undertake some valuable prep work in advance to make mealtime even easier. You can slice and pound your chicken cutlets, and prepare the individual breading mixtures (flour, egg wash, panko mix) up to a day ahead of time, storing them separately and properly covered in the refrigerator. You can also fully bread the chicken cutlets up to a few hours before you plan to cook; arrange the breaded chicken on a plate, cover it lightly with plastic wrap, and refrigerate. Just before air frying, give it a fresh, light spray of cooking oil for the best possible crispness. However, I generally don’t recommend fully cooking the dish entirely ahead of time if your primary goal is to achieve maximum crispness upon serving. Air Fryer Chicken Parmesan is an easy recipe that replicates the classic flavors of fried chicken parmesan, without the excess fat and calories.

Ingredients

  • 1 boneless, skinless chicken breast, or 2 chicken cutlets
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder, for flour mixture
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 egg
  • ⅓ cup panko breadcrumbs
  • ⅓ cup Parmesan cheese, freshly grated
  • Kosher salt, to taste
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder, for breadcrumb mixture
  • ½ teaspoon oregano
  • ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes, optional
  • ¼ cup prepared tomato sauce
  • 2 slices fresh mozzarella cheese, or ¼ cup shredded mozzarella
  • Cooking spray (e.g., olive oil or avocado oil spray)

Instructions

  1. If needed per your air fryer model, preheat to 370°F (175°C).
  2. Place one hand flat on top of 1 boneless, skinless chicken breast and holding a knife parallel to the cutting board, slice it horizontally, from the thick end to the thin end, into two even pieces. If your chicken cutlets are not even in thickness, place the pieces of chicken in between two slices of plastic wrap and pound to even thickness.
  3. Prepare the breading station by setting up 3 shallow dishes. In the first dish, mix ¼ cup all-purpose flour with ½ teaspoon kosher salt and ½ teaspoon garlic powder. In the second dish, whisk 1 egg with 2 tablespoons water and a pinch of salt. In the final dish, combine ⅓ cup panko breadcrumbs, ⅓ cup Parmesan cheese, ½ teaspoon oregano, and ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (if using).
  4. Dredge the chicken in the flour, shaking off the excess, then dip into the egg mixture. Allow the excess egg to drip off and then finally coat the chicken in the breadcrumb mixture, pressing to adhere, and place on a plate. Spray the top with cooking spray.
  5. Place the chicken, sprayed side down, in the basket or tray of the air fryer. Spray the chicken again with cooking spray, so that now each side has been coated in cooking spray. Air fry for 6 minutes at 370°F (175°C). Remove the basket/tray from the air fryer and flip the chicken. Return to the air fryer for 4 minutes.
  6. Remove the basket or tray from the air fryer and top each piece of chicken with about 2 tablespoons of tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese.
  7. Return to the air fryer and cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the chicken has reached an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
  8. Serve immediately.

Equipment

  • Air Fryer
  • Meat Mallet (optional, for pounding chicken)
  • Instant-read Meat Thermometer
  • Three shallow dishes or bowls
  • Tongs

Notes

  • This recipe is designed for 2 pieces of chicken, but it can easily be doubled or even tripled. Just keep in mind you will need to work in batches, as you don’t want to overcrowd the air fryer.
  • If you need to prepare in batches, place the uncooked breaded chicken in the refrigerator while the first batch is in the air fryer. Once the first batch has been cooked through, place the cooked chicken parmesan on a sheet pan and hold warm in a 200°F (93°C) oven.
  • Gluten-Free Modification: Use an all-purpose 1:1 gluten-free flour in place of the all-purpose flour and gluten-free panko breadcrumbs in place of regular panko.
  • Egg-Free Modification: If you are egg-free, use milk (dairy or non-dairy) or buttermilk in place of the egg wash.
  • Storage/Reheating: Store leftover Chicken Parmesan in an airtight container for up to 3 days in the refrigerator. To reheat, air fry the chicken parmesan for 3-5 minutes at 360°F (182°C), or until warmed through, to regain crispness.
