For those who frequently visit this blog, you’ll know that last year was an extraordinary one for my family and me. We spent a meaningful six months in Brazil, my home country. This extended stay was particularly significant as I wanted to be surrounded by my family during the birth of my baby boy. My husband, with remarkable flexibility, managed his work remotely, joining us in Brazil for the entire period, punctuated by a few essential trips back to North America. It was an experience rich in both joy and challenges, offering us a unique opportunity to reconnect with our roots and immerse ourselves in Brazilian culture after seven years of living in Toronto. This time in Brazil, though demanding at times, truly set the stage for our broader South American exploration.
An Unforgettable Family Adventure to Argentina and Uruguay
While in Brazil, my family proposed an exciting vacation to neighboring Argentina and Uruguay. It was an idea I immediately embraced. Being already in South America made the trip incredibly convenient and efficient. I had always dreamed of visiting these two beautiful countries, known for their distinct cultures, stunning landscapes, and rich histories. Our son, Thomas, was nine months old at the time, and I must say, he was an absolute trooper throughout the entire vacation. He truly thrived being outdoors, his face constantly lit up with smiles as he absorbed all the new sights and sounds of the bustling streets and serene parks.
Traveling with an infant can seem daunting, but Thomas adapted wonderfully. Mornings began with hearty breakfasts at our hotels, where he happily enjoyed fruits, bread, and eggs. Throughout the day, he was quite content with his baby purée food, fresh fruits, and even sampled some local cuisine from restaurants. It was far easier than I had anticipated, a testament to his adaptable nature and the incredible support from my husband and family. Our journey began in Montevideo, the captivating capital of Uruguay, where we spent five delightful days. This city quickly stole our hearts, primarily due to its incredibly warm and welcoming people. Uruguayans are renowned for their friendliness and politeness, and we experienced this firsthand everywhere we went. Moreover, Montevideo offers a remarkable sense of safety, a comforting factor that unfortunately isn’t always a given in some South American cities. This feeling of security allowed us to relax and explore with peace of mind, truly savoring every moment.

The city boasts an impressive array of delectable meat dishes, often featuring expertly grilled cuts that are an absolute must-try. Beyond the exquisite food, Montevideo is an excellent destination for families traveling with children. The city is dotted with numerous parks and expansive outdoor areas, perfect for little ones to play and explore. We spent many happy hours enjoying these green spaces, watching Thomas delight in his surroundings.

With its numerous trees lining most streets, Montevideo encourages walking, making it easy to explore on foot and discover hidden gems around every corner. This natural beauty, combined with its welcoming atmosphere, makes Montevideo a truly memorable destination.

From the tranquil charm of Montevideo, our family journey continued to the vibrant metropolis of Buenos Aires, Argentina. A comfortable ferry ride across the Rio de la Plata, lasting just a couple of hours, seamlessly transported us to this incredible city. I can confidently say that Buenos Aires is, by far, my favorite city in South America – an absolute masterpiece of culture, history, and architectural grandeur. It’s a destination that promises and delivers an unforgettable experience for every traveler.
Often referred to as the “Paris of South America,” Buenos Aires lives up to its reputation with its distinctly European-inspired architecture. Every street corner, every plaza, reveals stunning buildings and intricate details, making it a dream for those who love to explore on foot. The city offers an incredibly rich cultural tapestry, from its passionate tango traditions to its world-class museums and bustling art scenes. Among my absolute favorite places in Buenos Aires are:
- Bosques de Palermo (Palermo Woods): This sprawling urban park, encompassing several gardens and lakes, serves as the city’s largest and most vital green space. It’s perfect for leisurely walks, boat rides, or simply enjoying nature amidst the urban buzz.
- La Casa Rosada (The Pink House): The iconic executive mansion and office of the President of Argentina. It’s historically significant as the stage for famous speeches by figures like Perón and Evita, its distinctive color making it instantly recognizable.
- La Boca Neighborhood: A kaleidoscope of vibrant colors, especially along Caminito Street. This iconic quarter is renowned for its brightly painted houses, street artists, and impromptu tango performances that spill onto the cobblestone streets, offering an authentic glimpse into Argentine culture.
- El Ateneo Grand Splendid: What was once a magnificent theater has been transformed into one of the most breathtaking bookstores in the world, a title it earned from the BBC. Walking through its ornate halls, past velvet curtains and intricate frescoes, truly feels like stepping into a dream. It’s a must-visit for book lovers and architecture enthusiasts alike.
No trip to Buenos Aires is complete without indulging in the traditional Argentinian asado. Argentinians are masters of the grill, and their barbecues are legendary worldwide. The quality of the meat, coupled with the convivial atmosphere of an asado, creates an unparalleled dining experience that every visitor should savor. Beyond asado, be sure to try other local delicacies like empanadas, dulce de leche, and their exquisite wines. Buenos Aires is a city that engages all the senses, leaving a lasting impression of beauty, passion, and flavor.
