Delicious Brazilian Shrimp Pie, a comforting dish made with fresh shrimp and a light blender dough.

There’s something truly special about the flavors of home, especially when life brings big changes. As I near the end of my pregnancy journey, my cravings have taken a delightful turn towards the comforting embrace of Brazilian cuisine. It might sound a bit unconventional, but all I truly desire are the hearty and familiar tastes of Brazil. Staples like perfectly cooked rice and my pressure cooker beans have been my go-to, representing the essence of popular Brazilian meals and my personal favorites. Living in Canada means not always having easy access to all the traditional ingredients, which is why I’ve dedicated myself to discovering and perfecting easy-to-make Brazilian recipes that transport me right back home with every bite.

With the colder weather setting in, my desire for warm, comforting meals has only intensified. For me, few dishes embody comfort quite like a homemade pie. Don’t you agree? In Brazil, savory pies, particularly those filled with succulent chicken or flavorful shrimp, are incredibly popular. We often enjoy them as a satisfying main course, typically accompanied by a refreshing green salad, making them a perfect choice for lunch or dinner. This Brazilian Shrimp Pie is a prime example of such a dish, offering a wonderful blend of rich flavors and a surprisingly light texture.

The Secret to Brazilian Pie Perfection: An Incredibly Easy Blender Dough

What makes these Brazilian pies so universally beloved isn’t just their delicious fillings, but the remarkable simplicity of their crust. Forget the complicated kneading and rolling of traditional pastry; for this recipe, the dough is incredibly easy to prepare. All you need to do is combine the ingredients in a blender. Yes, it’s that straightforward! This method revolutionizes pie-making, making it accessible even for those new to baking. The result is a wonderfully fluffy, tender crust that perfectly complements any savory filling you choose.

Beyond the simple dough, the versatility of the filling is another huge advantage. This recipe features a delightful shrimp filling, but don’t hesitate to get creative with what you have on hand. Your refrigerator is often a treasure trove of potential ingredients. Think vibrant red peppers, fresh green onions, tender broccoli florets, or sweet carrots – almost any vegetable can find a happy home within this pie. And if shrimp isn’t your preference, or if you simply want to try something different, feel free to substitute it with other proteins like flaky tuna or tender salmon. This adaptability ensures that every pie can be a unique culinary adventure tailored to your taste and available ingredients.

Enhancing Your Brazilian Shrimp Pie: Healthy & Flavorful Adaptations

One of the beauties of home cooking is the ability to adapt recipes to suit your dietary needs or preferences. For this Brazilian Shrimp Pie, I’ve opted for a few thoughtful substitutions to make it a little lighter without sacrificing any of the authentic flavor. The traditional recipe typically calls for cow’s milk, but I chose to use almond milk. This simple swap significantly reduces the fat content, making the pie a more health-conscious option while still achieving a perfectly creamy dough.

Similarly, where vegetable oil is often used, I made the conscious decision to incorporate coconut oil. Coconut oil not only offers a distinctive, subtle tropical note that beautifully enhances the overall flavor profile of the pie, but it also provides a different type of healthy fat. While I used white flour for this particular batch due to availability, I can confidently say that this pie recipe would work wonderfully with whole wheat flour. Swapping to whole wheat flour would add a boost of fiber and nutrients, giving the pie an even healthier edge. If you prefer a richer, more traditional flavor, feel free to use the conventional ingredients – cow milk and vegetable oil – and rest assured, the pie will still be incredibly delicious. The most important thing is that you’re enjoying a wholesome, homemade meal, free from the excessive processing found in many store-bought alternatives.

Serving Suggestions and Beyond

This Brazilian Shrimp Pie is a complete meal in itself, but it truly shines when paired with the right accompaniments. A crisp, light green salad, perhaps with a simple vinaigrette, provides a refreshing contrast to the rich filling. For an even more authentic Brazilian experience, consider serving it alongside a classic Brazilian rice dish or a sprinkle of farofa (toasted cassava flour). To complete your culinary journey to Brazil, why not complement your meal with a glass of refreshing Caipirinha? This iconic Brazilian cocktail is the perfect festive touch. And for dessert, if you’re still craving something sweet, this delicious Gluten-free No Bake Peanut Butter Pie makes a wonderful, indulgent finish.

If this pie sparks your craving for more comforting, hearty meals, I highly recommend exploring other delightful recipes. Each of these dishes delivers that comforting embrace we all sometimes need, proving that homemade food is always the best choice. This traditional Brazilian shrimp pie recipe is simple, satisfying, and most importantly delicious. You won’t believe how easy it is to make the dough!

Ingredients

For the filling:

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • ½ onion chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves chopped
  • 1 tomato peeled and seeded, chopped
  • 2 cups medium-sized shrimp, peeled
  • 1 cup green peas, fresh or canned
  • 1 cup canned corn
  • Salt and fresh ground black pepper to taste

For the dough:

  • 1 cup almond milk
  • ¾ cup coconut oil melted
  • 2 eggs
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 ½ cup flour (all-purpose or whole wheat)

Instructions

  1. Pre-heat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, add the olive oil, chopped onion, minced garlic, and chopped tomato. Sauté these ingredients for about 5 minutes until the onion is translucent and the tomatoes begin to soften.
  3. Add the peeled shrimp to the skillet and cook for an additional 3 minutes, or until the shrimp turn opaque and pink. Be careful not to overcook them, as they can become rubbery.
  4. Stir in the green peas and canned corn. Season generously with salt and fresh ground black pepper according to your preference. Cook for just 1 more minute to allow the flavors to meld. Remove from heat and set the filling aside.
  5. For the dough, combine the almond milk, melted coconut oil, eggs, a pinch of salt, and baking powder in a blender jar. Blend on high for about 1 minute until well combined.
  6. Gradually add the flour to the blender, a little at a time, while the blender is running on a low setting. Once all the flour is added, blend for another 3 minutes until the dough is smooth and lump-free. The consistency should be pourable.
  7. Grease a baking sheet or pie dish. Pour half of the prepared dough evenly into the bottom of the dish.
  8. Spoon the shrimp and vegetable filling over the first layer of dough, spreading it out evenly.
  9. Carefully pour the remaining half of the dough over the filling, ensuring it covers the shrimp mixture completely.
  10. Optionally, sprinkle the top with some grated Parmesan cheese for an extra golden crust and savory flavor.
  11. Bake in the pre-heated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the pie is beautifully golden brown on top and cooked through.
  12. Remove from the oven, let it cool slightly before slicing, and enjoy your delicious Brazilian Shrimp Pie!

Notes

  • If you are using frozen peas, there’s no need to thaw them beforehand; you can add them directly to the skillet from frozen.
  • When measuring the flour for the dough, spoon it into the measuring cup and level it off with a straight edge rather than packing it down. This prevents using too much flour, which can result in a dense dough.
  • If you don’t have a food processor or blender, you can prepare the dough by hand. Simply whisk the wet ingredients together, then gradually add the dry ingredients, mixing until smooth.
  • To store: Any leftover pie can be tightly wrapped in plastic film or aluminum foil and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • To reheat: Reheat individual slices in the microwave for a quick warm-up, or place the entire pie (covered loosely with foil to prevent over-browning) in a preheated oven at 300°F (150°C) until warmed through.
