My Journey to Loving Halloween Treats (The Healthy Way!)

Growing up in Brazil, Halloween wasn’t a traditional holiday. While some English schools organized small parties for children, the vibrant, spooky celebrations common in North America simply weren’t part of our cultural fabric. It was a shame, as I always found the concept of dressing up and collecting treats so fascinating!

However, after immigrating to Canada, I quickly fell in love with this exciting holiday. The autumn air, the vibrant decorations, and the sheer joy of trick-or-treating transformed my perspective. But as much as I appreciate the fun of indulging, I also learned that Halloween doesn’t have to mean a sugar overload or a “sugar coma,” as I used to joke! There are countless ways to enjoy the season with treats that are not only delicious but also align with a healthier lifestyle. These gluten-free Halloween brownies are a prime example – offering all the rich flavor you crave without compromise. Baking them with your kids becomes a memorable activity, creating shared moments of joy and deliciousness!

Why Almond Butter is Your New Best Friend for Brownies

The secret to the incredible texture and guilt-free nature of these brownies lies in their innovative batter base: almond butter. Instead of relying on conventional flour, which can be heavy and contain gluten, almond butter provides a rich, nutty foundation that’s naturally gluten-free. It contributes healthy fats and protein, making these brownies more satisfying and providing sustained energy rather than a sugar crash. We’ve also opted for honey as a natural sweetener, adding another layer of wholesome goodness and a nuanced flavor profile that perfectly complements the almond and chocolate notes.

The beauty of using almond butter extends beyond its nutritional benefits. It helps create an exceptionally fudgy and moist brownie, a characteristic often sought after in this beloved dessert. The healthy fats in almond butter ensure that each bite is melt-in-your-mouth tender, while also contributing to that desirable dense brownie texture that holds up well. It’s a game-changer for anyone looking for a healthier twist on a classic treat, especially those navigating gluten sensitivities or simply aiming for more mindful indulgence.

Effortless Baking: A One-Bowl Wonder!

One of the best features of this recipe is its incredible simplicity. You don’t need a myriad of bowls or complex steps. It’s truly a “one-bowl wonder” that makes baking accessible and enjoyable, even for novice bakers or when you’re short on time. Here’s a quick overview of how straightforward it is:

  1. Combine Wet Ingredients: Start by whisking the eggs, then add them to a large bowl with almond butter, honey, and vanilla extract. Mix until wonderfully smooth.
  2. Fold in Dry Ingredients: Introduce the cocoa powder, baking soda, and kosher salt. Mix gently until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
  3. Chocolatey Goodness: Melt some semi-sweet chocolate chips (a quick microwave session does the trick!) and fold them into the batter. This adds an extra layer of deep chocolate flavor and helps achieve that signature fudgy texture.
  4. Bake to Perfection: Pour the luscious batter into a greased 9×9 baking pan and bake for approximately 30 minutes. The key is to bake until the brownies are set but still slightly soft in the center for maximum fudginess.

That’s it! Minimal cleanup, maximum deliciousness. This streamlined process means you can spend less time scrubbing dishes and more time enjoying the delightful aroma filling your kitchen and, eventually, the delectable results.

Crafting the Silky Chocolate Frosting

No brownie is complete without a decadent frosting, and our simple chocolate topping is the perfect complement to these almond butter brownies. While your brownies are baking to perfection, you can easily prepare a smooth, rich chocolate frosting. All you need are dark chocolate chips and a splash of almond milk.

The technique is simple: gently melt the dark chocolate chips over simmering water in a heatproof bowl (creating a makeshift double boiler). This method ensures even melting without burning the chocolate. As the chocolate begins to melt into a glossy pool, stir in the almond milk. Continue mixing until you achieve a beautifully smooth and luscious ganache-like frosting. The dark chocolate adds a sophisticated depth of flavor, balancing the sweetness of the brownie, while the almond milk keeps it dairy-free and wonderfully creamy. Allow the frosting to cool slightly before spreading it over your cooled brownies to prevent it from running off. This brief cooling period will give it a perfect consistency for spreading.

Sprinkle on the Halloween Magic!

Once your brownies are frosted, it’s time for the final, most festive touch: Halloween sprinkles! These aren’t just for decoration; they instantly transform your delicious brownies into a holiday-appropriate masterpiece. The vibrant oranges, purples, blacks, and greens, along with playful shapes like bats and ghosts, immediately signal “Halloween fun!” This is also where you can really get the kids involved. Let them unleash their creativity, sprinkling the colorful confections over the still-soft chocolate frosting. Not only does it add a delightful crunch and extra burst of sweetness, but it makes the entire baking experience an interactive and memorable family activity. Remember, the key is to add the sprinkles immediately after frosting, before the chocolate sets, to ensure they adhere perfectly.

    almond butter

    cup
    of honey
  • 1
    tbsp
    vanilla extract
  • 1/4
    cup
    cocoa powder
  • 1
    tsp
    baking soda
  • ½
    tsp.
    kosher salt
  • 3/4
    cup
    semi sweet chocolate chips
  • 2
    tablespoons
    of Halloween sprinkles

For the chocolate Frosting

  • 1
    cup
dark chocolate chips or dark chocolate bar
    chopped
  • 6
    tablespoons
    of almond milk

Instructions

  • Pre-heat oven to 325˚F.
  • Grease a 9 x9 baking pan with cooking spray, butter or coconut oil. Set aside.
  • In a small bowl add the two eggs and whisk very well.
  • In a large bowl, pour almond butter, honey, vanilla extract and the whisked eggs. Mix well with a spatula until smooth.
  • Add all the remaining ingredients (cocoa powder, baking soda, kosher salt), except the chocolate chips, and mix well to combine.
  • Melt the semi-sweet chocolate chips in a microwave (or over a double boiler) and pour into the batter. Mix everything well to combine.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan, spreading evenly.
  • Bake for about 25 – 30 minutes or until the brownies are cooked through but still fudgy in the center. A toothpick inserted should come out with moist crumbs.
  • While the brownies are in the oven, prepare the chocolate frosting.
  • In a heatproof bowl, add dark chocolate chips and place over simmering water (ensure the bowl does not touch the water).
  • When the chocolate begins to melt, add the almond milk and mix well with a spatula until all is combined and smooth, creating a luscious frosting.
  • Allow the chocolate frosting to cool to a spreadable consistency before icing the brownies.
  • Once brownies are cooled, cut them into small squares (approximately 12 pieces). You can place the brownies on wax paper or a clean surface for easier frosting.
  • Gently spoon chocolate frosting onto the top of each brownie square. Immediately garnish with your favorite Halloween sprinkles before the chocolate frosting sets up. Enjoy your festive, guilt-free treats!

  • Sift Cocoa Powder: To ensure a smooth batter free of lumps, sift the cocoa powder beforehand, especially if it tends to clump.
  • Chocolate Customization: Feel free to use semi-sweet, dark, or even milk chocolate chips interchangeably in the recipe, based on your preference for how sweet or intense you’d like your brownies to taste.
  • Storage: To keep your brownies fresh, place them in an airtight container and store in the fridge for up to 5 days.
  • Freezing Instructions: For longer storage, individually wrap cooled brownies or place them in a freezer-safe bag. They can be frozen for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature before serving.
