My Pregnancy’s Middle and Final Chapters

Embracing the Journey: My Second and Third Trimesters of Pregnancy

My Pregnancy Journey: Navigating the Second and Third Trimesters

It’s been over four months since I last shared an update on my pregnancy here on the blog, detailing my first trimester. Today, I’m thrilled to bring you up to speed on the latter half of this incredible journey. While I initially considered writing separate posts for my second and third trimesters, the reality of my experience led me to combine them. My second trimester unfolded with such serene calm that there were times I barely remembered I was pregnant – a truly fortunate and uneventful period that left me with fewer dramatic tales to tell, yet abundant joy. The third, however, brought its own distinct set of challenges and profound moments, making a combined reflection feel more comprehensive and authentic to the full spectrum of emotions and physical changes.

The Golden Glow: Embracing My Second Trimester

As I mentioned, my second trimester was nothing short of wonderful. It truly lived up to its reputation as the “golden” period of pregnancy. The persistent fatigue that had weighed me down during the initial months vanished entirely. Remember how I described feeling utterly exhausted and unmotivated in my first trimester? That debilitating tiredness became a distant memory, replaced by an invigorating surge of energy that felt almost miraculous.

It’s quite amusing to reflect on, but this trimester surprisingly became one of the most productive periods of my life. I found myself waking up almost every day at 5 AM, driven by a renewed vigor to work on my blog. My mornings were a whirlwind of writing new posts, meticulously editing pictures, engaging with my community on social media, and diligently answering emails – all before 7:30 AM. After this productive start, I’d get ready for my day job. Returning home around 5:45 PM, my evenings were then dedicated to preparing dinner and tidying the kitchen. Of course, by 8 PM, I was genuinely tired, but it was a fulfilling exhaustion, a testament to a day well-spent. This rhythm, while intense, was manageable thanks to my newfound energy. My husband was a tremendous help with household chores, though his work often required him to travel. During those times, I managed our home solo, and I found a surprising sense of empowerment in it.

The joy of feeling baby movements in the second trimester

The Magical Moment: Feeling My Baby’s First Movements

Beyond the return of my energy, the second trimester gifted me with one of the most profound and anticipated experiences of pregnancy: feeling the baby move for the very first time. This sensation was truly incredible, a magical milestone that solidifies the reality of the life growing within. Initially, I must admit, it felt quite strange, like tiny flutters or bubbles popping inside me. It was an entirely new bodily sensation, almost alien at first. But within minutes, as I tuned into these subtle shifts, I grew accustomed to it, and pure wonder replaced any initial oddness. It’s an indescribable joy to feel a human being developing, growing, and dancing inside you. What an absolute miracle, a constant, gentle reminder of the precious life unfolding!

For me, this moment undeniably marks the most exciting phase of pregnancy. It sparks an endless curiosity, making you wonder about the little person’s personality already forming within. I started to imagine what he was doing in there, whether he was stretching, playing, or simply resting. This period also deepened my connection with him. I began talking to him more, narrating my day, and sharing my thoughts. I’d play him soft melodies and read Portuguese stories, not just to bond, but also with the hope that he might learn my first language from these early interactions. It felt like laying the foundation for our lifelong bond.

This excitement isn’t exclusive to the mother; it’s a truly special moment for the father or partner as well. It’s when they can finally feel the baby moving by placing a hand on the belly, transforming the abstract idea of a baby into a tangible, kicking reality. Pierre, my husband, absolutely adored feeling his movements. I vividly recall the first time he felt a distinct kick – his reaction was priceless! He literally freaked out, his face a mix of shock and utter delight. He exclaimed, “Holy @#$%!” I laughed so much, it felt like it was just yesterday. He was genuinely impressed and, from that moment on, he started a beautiful ritual of constantly rubbing my belly and playfully interacting with our baby. Seeing his joy and devotion brings me such immense happiness and reassurance.

Finding out the gender and preparing the nursery

The Gender Reveal and Nursery Dreams

Another cherished highlight of my second trimester was undoubtedly discovering the gender of our baby. As I mentioned in my previous post, I had a strong intuition, a vivid dream even before I became pregnant, that my baby would be a boy. At our 20-week ultrasound appointment, my suspicions were joyfully confirmed: we are having a boy! It’s serendipitous, as I’ve always dreamt of having a son. The moment we received the news was incredibly happy and emotional. With the gender finally known, our preparations for the nursery truly began in earnest. My husband took on the task of painting the walls, and together, we embarked on several delightful DIY crafts to personalize our baby’s space. It was such a fun and collaborative experience, creating a loving environment for our little one.

Reflecting on it all, I can confidently say the second trimester was the absolute best period of my pregnancy. It’s a time when you start to “look” pregnant, and people around you share in your excitement and happiness. Watching your belly expand becomes a source of wonder, not just a physical change. All those initial anxieties and worries about “is everything okay with my baby?” tend to subside as you feel constant movements and receive positive reports from your doctor. The first exciting kicks become a daily reassurance, and critically, the debilitating tiredness and morning sickness are finally gone. This period of renewed energy, profound connection, and joyous anticipation truly made it the easiest and most enjoyable chapter of my pregnancy journey. However, I must confess, I can’t quite say the same for my third trimester.

Navigating the challenges of the third trimester

The Home Stretch: Navigating My Third Trimester

True to what everyone warned me about, the third trimester has certainly not been an easy ride. With only two or three weeks remaining until my due date, this final phase of pregnancy has presented its unique set of challenges. My body, quite naturally, is slowing down more and more each day. Simple tasks become more arduous, and the physical demands of carrying a growing baby are increasingly palpable. Sleep, once a refuge, has become elusive. I find myself making countless trips to the bathroom throughout the night, interrupting any chance of deep rest. Compounding this is the persistent heartburn, a common yet incredibly uncomfortable pregnancy symptom.

I’ve tried numerous strategies to alleviate the heartburn: eating more frequent, smaller meals, meticulously avoiding greasy and acidic foods, and ensuring I don’t eat within two hours of bedtime. To be honest, these measures have offered limited relief. The reality is that hormonal changes during pregnancy are a primary culprit for heartburn, making it incredibly difficult to fully counteract. As a result, my sleep is shallow and fragmented, leaving me feeling tired and sluggish during the day. Despite the discomfort, I make a conscious effort to stay active. I walk as much as I comfortably can, and sometimes, I seek the soothing embrace of the water by swimming in a pool. I firmly believe that regular, gentle exercise, even in these later stages, helps boost energy levels and manage some of the physical discomforts.

Maternity Leave and Nesting Instincts

Now that I am officially on maternity leave, I am wholeheartedly dedicating this precious time to final preparations for our baby’s arrival, while also cherishing some much-needed moments for myself. My days are filled with purpose, from organizing every last detail in the nursery to practical tasks like cooking and freezing a variety of meals. This meal prep is a strategy I hope will significantly ease the burden of cooking during those whirlwind first few weeks after the baby arrives, allowing me to focus entirely on bonding with our newborn. My anticipation is also building for my mom’s arrival from Brazil in just two weeks! It’s been about seven months since I’ve last seen her, and I am beyond excited to give her a massive hug and proudly show off my pregnant belly. Her support and presence will be invaluable during this transformative time.

Ready for baby: nursery complete, awaiting arrival

Anticipation, Love, and Gratitude

At this final stage, my emotions are a rich tapestry of worry and excitement. The worry stems from the unknown; becoming a parent is an entirely new chapter, and I don’t truly know what to expect or how I will navigate its complexities. Yet, this apprehension is beautifully balanced by an overwhelming excitement as I draw closer to finally meeting my little baby boy. Despite my recent complaints about third-trimester symptoms, I truly shouldn’t dwell on them. In reality, I’ve been blessed with a wonderfully calm, good, and relaxing pregnancy overall. I haven’t experienced any major complications, and most importantly, my baby is incredibly healthy, which is the paramount concern for any expectant mother.

His adorable little nursery is completely ready, awaiting his grand arrival. I had such a joyous time organizing every detail, from the tiny decorations to the carefully folded blankets. His closet is also impeccably prepared; I dedicated an entire day to washing all his cute, miniature clothes using an awesome hypoallergenic and fragrance-free laundry detergent specifically designed for babies, and everything is neatly ironed and put away. It was a delightful, albeit exhaustive, project, and I had an absolute blast immersing myself in the nesting process.

It’s truly a wonderful, almost surreal experience, to prepare so meticulously for someone you haven’t even met yet, but whom you already love with an intensity that knows no bounds. While I don’t know exactly what to expect after the birth of my baby, I am certain of one fundamental truth: what we all need most to be good parents is love. And this, I know, I have in abundance. I feel incredibly blessed to be surrounded by an amazing support system – my loving husband, my dear mom, and my supportive in-laws. Knowing I won’t be navigating this new journey alone fills me with confidence that everything will be alright, no matter what challenges come our way.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and share in this deeply personal and exciting journey. Your support truly means the world to me. You guys are the best! 😉

P.S. These beautiful pregnancy photos were taken when I was seven months along. A huge thank you to my dear photographer Melissa for capturing these precious moments!
